A huge thank you to everyone involved in planting over 5000 seedlings at Silverstream for the 2020 season.
After the country went into lockdown in March all our confirmed planting groups were cancelled.
Once we went to level 2 we got on the phone and rang individuals and families to come and help, resulting in a total of 60 people helping to plant. On May 16th, we started our regular community planting days – planting on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
Some people came often and some only once, choosing the day that suited them best, but most were pleased to have something positive to do. We practised social distancing as we planted, didn’t share food or drinks, and had a registrar to sign in and out.
Over 1000 hours was put in by our dedicated volunteers as well as local groups – including Conservation Volunteers, The Student Volunteer Army, Waimakariri Volunteers Army, Waimakariri Cubs/Keas/Scouts, Clarkville School and St Patrick’s School.
Swannanoa Volunteer Fire Brigade watered our newly planted seedlings and since October our regular volunteers have been hard at work mulching the large planting site.
The growth over the last few months has been phenomenal!
